DescriptionOne of Oxford's oldest and finest pub, with a great range of good beer and a decent meal. Favoured by serious drinking goths and Terry Pratchett fans.

He's not wrong y'know! :) Excellent beer, coal braziers in the garden during the winter. Regular beer / zoider festivals. Gets rather full in termtime though. Best to go when the students have gone home.

The coal braziers seem to have been replaced with naaasty gas powered affairs. Pity. Does tend to be rammed with students, so don't bother on a Friday or Saturday night in term time. Great beer. Food's good, too.

Legend has it that back in the good ol' days (well, pre- my arrival in Oxford) when Oxford University actually had a gothsoc, and not just a rocksoc, that this is where they met. It's still ocasionally used by RPG-ers into "Vampyre", so not everyone you think s a goth is. They've just got fantastic clothes on. You are equally likely to hear arguments over the merits of Beborn Beton and whether Eton or Harrow was a better school to have gone to.

Hmm, this is definitely a traditional pub, complete with very low ceilings! Although the coal braziers outside are a nice touch, the inside is all wood-pannelly, if I remember correctly... Not recommended for those of the cyber persuasion!

As good as the Turf used to be I really have to say that at the moment it has gone downhill. It is still a lovely place but the bar service is absolutely appalling - you have to wait at least 20 mins (no exaggeration!) and the other day I was told off for not being in the queue - who queues at a bar?!?

If you don't want to get annoyed, pop in just as it opens, the place is actually quiet then. =)

"Fire: giver of warmth; scourge of Prometheus; eradicator of dead wood...". The braziers are really pretty cool. A ready-salted crisp thrown on the fire survives a surprising length of time, before turning into what looks like a carbon slice. Mulled wine at Christmas is good, too; except (service-related) there's only a tiny little heated pot to keep it in, and they're always running out!
