The Gloucester Arms
The Gloc is Oxford's Rock, Goth, Metal and Alternative hangout. It's small but fairly friendly, and you can always be sure to run into a few freaks here.
The Bullingdon Arms
One of Oxford's alternative pubs. Lots of smaller bands play gigs here. Always good for a pint.
Turf Tavern
One of Oxford's oldest and finest pub, with a great range of good beer and a decent meal. Favoured by serious drinking goths and Terry Pratchett fans.
The Antiquity Hall
Since the arrival of The Morpheus Project, The Antiquity Hall has become something of a gathering ground for goths. It's a very nice pub, with the cheapest beer outside of student bars, and friendly barstaff and regulars.
Harcourt Arms
Old-time haunt of OxGoffs. Quiet, friendly place, with a corking pint of London Pride, and really good (and cheap!) cheese toasties.
The Perch
Less of a goth/freak pub than a really nice place to go for a quiet drink with friends in the summer. The garden overlooks the river, and is full of weeping willows. Even more fun is the life-size chess board with big pieces that they have set up in the garden. If you can't play chess, you can play this!
The Hobgoblin
I know there are two Hobgoblins in Oxford, but they're townie/trendy pubs, and really not worth bothering with. The Hob in Bicester, however, is run by a metaller with goth "sympathies". It's a good place for beer, cheap (but lush!) food, and a great place to check out the odd local band. They occasionally have 80s nights, punk nights, etc. Try the Hobgoblin challenge, and get your mug up on the wall with the rest of us!
Freuds
Not a goth pub at all, although you'll wish it were! A beautiful old church that's been converted into a pub/bar/cocktail place/restaurant. Great drinks, but quite expensive. Worth going into for a coffee in the afternoon, so you can soak up the atmosphere and imagine how you'd decorate it if it were yours. On a Friday or Saturday night, however, avoid it like the plague. NB: The doormen here are very strict on IDs, so if you are underage, don't bother.
Hollybush
Cool pub to chill out in. Mix of metallers, grungers, punks, goths and general freaks plus some 'normal' ppl. Every ones chilled out though. Pool table/Darts board. BIG beer garden with a tent. Live music every Friday and most Saturdays from local Oxford bands in 'The Pit'. (Behind the Hollybush). Been drinking there since I was about 16. (1996).
The Red Lion Hotel
The Red Lion has it's own music venue called the Barn, and has live music, on a Friday and Saturday night. It's Great Venue, and always has a good atmosphere.
The Berkshire House
Olde worlde lots of wood, things hanging from the rafters. Just been taken over by a mate of mine from Whitby who is definately goth friendly. Would be interested in having a goth night if someone wanted to organise it. If you do, let us know we'll be there! Tell his Issy and Os sent you.
The Berkshire Ale House
Nice Olde Worlde pub on outskirts of Oxford. New Landlord is ex-patriot of Whitby and so very Goth friendly ~s~ Would probably host a Goth night if (easily) persuaded. Tell him Issy & Os sent you. (were not on commission honest!)
The Fishes Inn
This is, IMHO, one of the best pubs in the whole of Oxford. It is a bit of a hike from the city center, but its well worth it. This is a proper old village pub, with an absolutely VAST garden next to the Isis. The beer is reasnobly priced and the food whilst a touch pricey is very good. All in all a top place to spend those long hot summer evenings.
The Crawley New Inn
Old skool rock pub. Everyone is welcome. Great venue for gigs, festivals, medieval banquets, monthly Pagan gatherings, etc. Serves Wychwood beer. A bit out of the way so there's no reason to keep the noise down...
Walter Mitty's
Very cute little pub. The decor is amazing, the walls and ceiling are filled with oddities bolted to it. The best thing is the Monopoly board that goes around the whole room - and the stops on it are all Oxford streets. The beer is good, they also hold a pub quiz, a 70's/80's night, and they have a pool table. This really is a lovely little pub, and you will see something new everytime you go in.
The Cricketer's Arms
Now under new management, and he wants to turn the pub into a place like the Gloucester used to be! It is mainly intended to be a rock pub, but he's currently in talks to start a weekly goth night, and an industro-ebm night is also in the works. Until then, though, relax on the comfy sofas and enjoy the midnight licence! (Fridays and Saturdays only, I'm afraid.)
Angel and Greyhound
This isn't a goth or alternative pub, but as we're quite short on htem in Oxford it's worth a mention. It doesn't have music or TVs, it serves good beer It has a traditional pub atmosphere, quite dark and old-looking. It also does nice pub food that's not too expensive.
The Angel and Greyhound
This is a proper pub! No music, no tv, no hassle. It has good food and good beer.
The Temple Bar
The new home of the oxgoth massive. (On Tuesday nights, anyway). As well as brilliant bar staff and yummy food, there's also table football, pool, and gigantic connect four and jenga. And sofas!
the Port Mahone
This is a great old place dark poorly lit full of alcoves and on several diffrent levels everything i like in a pub when i want somewhere to read quietly over an ale, and they do a lot of good real ale . They are friendly to all kinds of people as long as your not too loud or too crazy .
The Cross Keys
Normally a nice quiet place, fairly good food, and average prices. its decorated with medievalesque stuff and has a non smoking section.
Wheatsheaf
Downstairs is a pub not specificly alternatively but not the type of crowd who will hit a guy for wearing eyeliner. Upstairs (which is more of interest) is a bar and a stage for mini-gigs. Just make sure you know what the gig is.
The Duke
This is a very recently refurbished pub it has some nice decor and a pool table, its everyone friendly. All the usal drinks and snacks plus some nice comfy seating .
The Eagle Tavern
Since it's makeover this pub has been doing well for itself. No longer just the old fogies place to go, and it seems to be the first place to be at before the Hollybush.
Maxwells
A townie-filled shithole with overpriced food and annoying music on a Friday or Saturday night, this place scrubs up surprisingly well when it's empty. Good for post-pub drinking during the week, and quiet afternoon cocktails. The student discount makes cocktails the same price as a pnt.
Chicago Rock Cafe
Another absolutely awful place to be at night, particularly on the weekend. However, they do 2 for 1 on all drinks (including cocktails) from 5 - 8, Monday - Friday. It's usually quite empty at this time, and they have 80s music videos playing above the bar.
The Beat Cafe
Small cocktail bar with friendly staff, a good atmosphere, and a menu of more than 60 cocktails, which are roughly £3 during the 5-9 happy hour, which runs all night on a Monday.
Duke of Cambridge
Posy cocktail bar that serves a goreous Sunday brunch and is absolutely packed during its 5-8 half price happy hour. Tends to be full of 'with-it' office workers and gold card students from Oxford proper. The cocktails are worth it.
Cafe Baba
Really nice, relaxed cocktail bar, which is unfortunately pricey and lacking a happy hour. The coffee cocktails are not to be missed, and the sweet pepper relish is to die for. They also have heaters for outside seating, when the inside gets too small. (The stairs to the loo are treacherous when drunk!)
Brickworks
Too tiny to bother with on a Friday or Saturday night, and the staff are usually too stoned to remember which drinks they serve, but the Brickworks do Oxford's best breakfast, with the 'build your own' concept. The idea is you tell the chef how much you want of what, and he cooks everything there and then. As varied as a buffet, but as fresh as a la carte.
Kaz Bar
Yummy tapas in an atmospheric setting. They serve cocktails, but the mojito is best avoided.
Cafe Coco's
Pizzeria and cocktail bar with good food, an early bird discount, and bizarre decor. What more could you want?
Moods
Slightly older than studenty crowd, mostly drinking 2 for 1 cocktails from 5-9 and enjoying the late licence till 2.
King's Arms
Frequented by "Students, dons, tourists, college servants, car workers, politicians, poets, musicians, film crews, office workers and more than a fair sprinkling of the eccentrics for which the city is renowned" and "reputed to possess more brains per square inch than any other bar in the world"
Eagle and Child
The old haunt of Tolkien (LOTR et al), C.S.Lewis, Carroll and other friends who met here regularly and read passages aloud from their latest works. Let down by the small bar and the narrow shape of the pub. Better if you can secure one of the cosy booths near the entrance.
Wine Vaults
Fairly laid back pub, nice friendly staff a few of whom are very cute, good drinks easy going atmosphere. Music is very hit and miss, the ocasional MAiden, Metallica depending on who is working. Could be a great Metal /Goth / Rock pub in time. They are hosting a metal night, could be made permanent with enough support.
The Swan
Small friendly pub,not to alternative YET but I do know that the bar manager is looking to get more freaks showing up. Bit of music on the Juke, good place to chill out, soon they are expanding and are planning to have an area for bands to just go and practice and stuff, so with a bit of encouragement this is easily gonna become a good alternative hang out
Priory
Metal night on mondays. Free entry, drinks promotions; its only just begun however the music played was very acceptable. A welcome alternative from other places in Banbury. Definately worth a look.
