Description, by jen
Potent but short-lived dark rock band from, yes, Leeds! Alarmingly like early Sisters & not without reason - MV gigged with SoM a fair bit & recorded for Merciful Release in 1982 under vonE's guiding hand before founding Rebirth Records (the result of a falling out with Guess Who, allegedly). They achieved UK indie chart success with "Snake Dance" & "Walk Into the Sun", then after considerable lineup reshuffling, disbanded in 1986. Former MV guitarist Tom Ashton's got some interesting tidbits on his website, url above. |

Part of the Leeds post-punk scene of the early 1980s, and a big influence on bands like Rosetta Stone and (obviously) Children On Stun. They quickly made a good impression with Sounds, Melody Maker and John Peel, enjoying Indie chart success both on Merciful Release and their own Rebirth label. Sadly it all went downhill in 1985, following the departure of lead vocalist Simon D. The addition of a live drummer did nothing to help them regain their passion, and after several cringeworthy children's TV appearances everything ground to a halt.

A compilation of the March Violets' singles originally released between 1982 and 1984 on the Merciful Release and Rebirth labels. Whilst they tend to be mentioned in the same breath as the Sisters of Mercy -- they have a shared history and both have an interest in drum machines -- the Violets always tended to have more melodic output. Stand-out tracks include Religious As Hell (which as MR013 became the first Merciful Release record to enter the Independent Single Chart) and both versions of Snake Dance . Some excellent material which still sounds fresh twenty years later.
