their finest moment. "closer" is desperate, subtle and oh so moving=) curtis didn't sing his songs, he handed them on to you.

This is a compilation of singles and early stuff, along with live tracks recorded only days before Curtis' suicide. I think it's the second-to-last Joy Division gig ever that is captured here. A great comp., although a lot of these studio tracks are available elsewhere. I highly recommend tracking this down on Canadian vinyl, as it includes and additional surprise live track that is not listed on the liner notes. The Italian version may have it too.

One of the two major posthumous Joy Division releases (the other being 'Still'), 'Substance' collects recordings from their punk beginnings as Warsaw to the mellow, semi-commercial period that, ironically, directly preceded Curtis' suicide. Superior to the partially live 'Still', 'Substance' is the third essential purchase after the band's two 'proper' albums.

Unknown Pleasures

Unleashed on a stunned world in 1979, 'Unknown Pleasures' is an unprecedented plunge into the abyss. From the bleak computer-scan cover to the shattering glass that ends the desperate 'I Remember Nothing', this is an uncompromisingly dark, timelessly potent and deeply serious masterpiece. No Goth should be without this record.
