• What is it?
  The site provides a degree of persistance and identity to the people in the UK & Ireland who read the *.gothic.* USENET newsgroups. That's why there's no online discussion forum software on here (yet).

• Where's the FAQ for the USENET newsgroups?
  The official site for the uk.people.gothic FAQ can be found at http://www.countb.areti.co.uk/upgfaq/. There's also a mirror at http://www.darkwave.org.uk/faq/ukpg/. The alt.gothic FAQ can be found at http://www.darkwave.org.uk/faq/ag/.
  PLEASE read the FAQ if you're a newsgroup newbie, as it will save you a lot of grief !

• What does it do?
  Currently there's:
  • A summary of user information
  • The UK gothmap
  • The not bob's net.goth gallery
  • Online Chat
  • A search facility
  • UK goth/industrial/alternative links

  More features get added as people request them, which means it does whatever you want it to.

• Who contributes to the site?
  Any registered user can contribute stuff to the site, or suggest features that they'd like to see here. The top ten list of contributors, the people who've been the busiest of all with submitting content, are:

• Whats the deal with registration?
  If you want to get yourself in the gallery, or on the goffmap, you'll have to register on the site. There will be other bits and bobs appearing on the site that will require people to be registered before a contribution can be made to that area. If you just want to appear on the map, you have to provide as a minimum, a username, password, email address (you can choose to conceal your email address), and a location. For the gallery, the minimum amount of information required is the same as for the map, but you have a photo of yourself (see the photo section).
  
  PLEASE NOTE: Netgoth moderators reserve the right to edit or delete submissions without warning, & this includes registrants. If you wish to remain registered, your profile should not contain threats, abusive or defamatory comments, anything illegal, explicit sexual content, OTT advertising or soliciting. Netgoth is not age restricted.

• How do I contribute to the site?
  After registering, you'll be able to add stuff to the map. First, log in, then use the big imagemap to navigate to the area you want to add stuff to, and you should see links at the bottom of each category that allow you to submit information. You'll be credited for any submission you make.

• The stuff I submit isn't getting approved - why not?
  In order to get approved, submissions need to be informative, accurate, coherent & relevant to the gothic community (we realise this encompasses a wide range of interests, & relevance is left to the moderators' discretion). Make sure the information on the form is complete & correct before submitting it, particularly location & URL details. Also ensure that what you're submitting is appropriate for the section:
  
  
  • Events: See the Events FAQ for guidelines.
  • Music DB: Currently closed for database work, but submissions guidelines will be included when it's open again.
  • Photos: Check below.
  • Goffmap:
    • Mailing lists: Only currently active email-based lists that are open to new members will be accepted (web-based forums should be submitted to Community Sites instead).
    • Community sites: This refers to sites centred around a particular location or interest. Most have discussion forums & require site registration in order to participate. If the site you wish to add isn't oriented toward discussion &/or group activities, submit it to Links instead.
    • Shops: For walk-in shops in the UK & online shops anywhere in the world. Gothic & specialist shops will be accepted, but as of August 2003 high-street chains will NOT, unless you explain why a particular branch is different & worthy of inclusion (& a moderator accepts it). When submitting, please elaborate on the shop's location & offerings as much as you can, as this assists members using Search.
    • Clubs: Venues worldwide; established regular nights should also be submitted to Events where they're more likely to be seen. One-off events will not be accepted to Clubs. Only submit a club if you've been there & enjoyed it (this is a recommendations listing, not an exhaustive index of all clubs everywhere), & please provide the address/location, contact details & a description of the atmosphere.
    • Pubs: If you've got a good local or stumbled across a gem somewhere, please let us know! If however you want to slam the staff, the punters, the jukebox or whatever, your submission won't be approved.
    • Other: Places of interest to goffick types, to include parks, landmarks, museums & so on. Describe the place & why you like it, provide location/directions, plus opening times & contact details where relevant. Hangout spots (e.g. town centres, cinemas etc) will not be accepted unless you include a convincing description to justify it.
    • Comments: Will generally be approved unless they're abusive, offensive, nonsensical or devoid of content.

• What if I'm outside the UK and Ireland, but I want to contribute?
  You can still register, just select 'notuk' from the available locations. The site is deliberately designed with a UK bias, as it is the UK netgoth site :)

• How do I edit my profile once I've registered?
  Log into the site with the username and password you provided. Then, either search for yourself, or use the map to select the area that you live in. Once you're examining your profile, you should see a link that says 'as this is your profile, you can edit it'. Clicking on that link will allow you to edit all the user modifiable parts of your profile, just don't forget to press the 'save' button when you're done.

• I tried to log in, but it doesn't seem to work?
  The login mechanism uses cookies to help with the user identification process - if your browser or firewall is configured to block cookies then you'll experience some difficulty. Setting your browser to allow cookies from this site is a good start. When you've successfully logged in, your username will appear in the top left corner of the page next to the netgoth.org.uk link.

• Can I use HTML tags in my profile?
  You can use <A>, <I>, and <B> tags in the hangouts and favourite things fields, all other HTML tags in those fields, and all HTML tags in any other field will be stripped out. (thanks species ;)

• How to I submit a photo?
  Edit your profile, and you'll see a section towards the bottom of the page that says 'upload your photo'. You'll have to have an image that is in GIF or JPEG format, and is 200x270 pixels or smaller - otherwise the automated upload facility will reject it. Use the 'browse' button to locate the file on your hard drive, then click 'save' to upload your photo to the site. It will have to be approved by a moderator before it appears!

• Why didn't my photo get approved?
  OK, the rule of thumb is it has to be you (or at least, a part of you). You can use your fave photoshop filters on yourself, but no celebrity photos, photos of inanimate objects, or anything that isn't actually you. Ideally your photo should help other people recognise you when you meet them down the pub for a drink. Yeah, it is a bit of a bummer that you might not be able to express yourself the way you want, but maybe we'll sort something else out in the future for people who want that.
  
  PLEASE NOTE: If you're under 16, your photo will NOT be approved. This is for your safety, and no exceptions will be made.

• I saw an entry for something on the map that has an inaccurate description?
  Use the 'add comment' feature to write a more authoritative description then :)

• Who builds and moderates the site?
  Moderators are listed in each section, and dishmop does what could loosely be described as "coding" and "design" in his spare time. Lots of people have helped in one way or another with beta testing, suggestions, that sort of thing. Among them are Taoist, graham, dave h, bobTfish, Kieran, Alien, jen and Sam.

• Someone is slagging my club/pub/shop/me off?
  When moderating the goffmap, we do allow a certain lattitude when users add submissions to the map, ones that contain outright rudeness are nuked. If you have a negative comment about a place, try to phrase your submission in a mature manner so we can all be wary of the place, rather than you.
  Any personal attacks, flaming, false submissions or other frankly immature crap will be removed without notice - as I said before, act like a grown-up.

• I really like my gothic Stortrooper, can I use it on my site?
  Conditionally yes, I have asked Stor about this, and they say that you must link through to Stor Entertainment to credit them for the image - to do otherwise is breaching the terms and conditions for the image generator and is thus illegal! I have seen some people make their own modifications to the Stortrooper image, while this is still copyright infringement, crediting Stor with a link will probably avoid them suing yo' ass off. And no, you can't modify the original and claim copyright on it yourself. By the way, the reason that we have the gothic stortroopers on this site is that I used to work for Stor!

• How do I use the Online Chat facility?
  Just click on the 'Online Chat' link in the toolbar, and a java applet will appear. If you need to, change your details in the input boxes and then click on the 'connect' button. You should then connect to the IRC chat server on the netgoth.org.uk machine.
  There's normally a few people online during the day who, if they're not working in real life, will be happy to say hi and chew the cud with you.
  Bear in mind :
  • like the uk.people.gothic newsgroup, any abusive behaviour will not be tolerated, and personals/soliciting is discouraged.
  • If you are behind a fascist firewall, you may get a connection refused or connection failed message - this isn't something I can help you with and you'll have to take it up with your friendly network administrator.
  • You are responsible for your actions and consequences in the chatroom, not me, and while we do try to have moderators online most of the time, it is not possible to have them online all of the time.
  • You can identify an operator by the @ symbol prefixing their username.

• I forgot my password, how can I get it back?
  This question comes up a lot. If you've forgotten your password, and the email address in your profile still works, just use the password reminder service. You will need to supply your username. If you've forgotten your username as well, then I'd suggest looking at the county you registered in on the map to refresh your memory.
  If the email address you provided in your profile isn't currently valid for whatever reason, and you've forgotten your password, don't mail in and ask for it because you will not get any response to your email. This is because there is no way to prove you are who you say you are, that's what the password is there for.
