Unless it has drastically changed recently, I wouldn't say Saturday at the Sugarmill is a Goth/Alternative night (full of lads in pastel shirts last time i saw the queue to it!). However, the venue does hold some good gigs. I don't know if it is still going (can someone please tell me?) but they used to have a goth/alternative night on a thursday.

I mourn for the days of The Stage. It's not been the same since it became The Sugarmill. They used to hold a great alternative night, with plenty of requests. These days the best you get is commercial rock and nu-metal. Saturdays are almost completely trendy. The choice between The Sugarmill and Chicos on a saturday? No competition, even if Chicos is full of college students.

I really don't understand why anyone would list this on GOTH net. The alternative Thursday nights don't exist anymore and haven't done for at least a year. Saturday night could be described as an Indie night, but never GOTH.

The original goth nights everyone rememers and loves, were originally abolished due to the amount of alcohol snuck into the place, and the lack of it bought (the ex-insider knows). There isn't anything that resembels a goth night anymore,Mondays now being for Indie kids, along with Thursdays, and god only knows what trendy stuff they've put onto Saturdays as they change there style so quickly. It's not all put downs though, it's always a place to keep in mind when small bands are playing, it has had a good mix in the past. My top advice: Take your normal friends there when they visit as not to scare them too much, but otherwise just keep your eye on the live gigs. Sometimes theres a winner.

The 'rock' night is starting again on the 30 of november- it is going to try and be the same as it was when it was a friday in 1996!!! i should be quite good as the bloke from tremelo studios has bought into the place and has got rid of the indie manager blokie!! yeay

New 'Rock' nite now on Saturdays, which makes a change to Chicos (which has steadily got deader on Saturdays since the Rock City nights started at the Void). Wasn't half bad, reminded me of how Fridays used to be but with the odd song I could actually dance to, more Nu-Metal stuff but a fair bit of Manson, NIN, prob Rob Zombie & some Mindless if we force Louis to play it :)

New night 'The Kitsch and the Cool', on the 3rd Thursday of the Month (£2 entry) is definately goth-friendly and a brill night out! Billed as an 'alternative eighties' night, I went last night and danced to at least 95% of the stuff! The Damned, Siouxsie,The Cure,Depeche Mode...What more could you possibly want??! The DJ is good about taking requests as well.

Makes a change from being in Chicos, but seems to be over run by little kiddies on a Staurday night :( Great place for gigs though :)

Definately too many kiddies on a saturday- and not really very busy either. If you just wanna go out & get pissed the atmosphere is actually a lot better on a friday nite...it's a lot busier & there's a better mix of different people. Musics trendy/pop/indie/alternative though...bit of everything really.

Bring back the Thursday rock nite at the mill, was so cool. Sat rock nite is ok, but is always packed. Brill venue for gigs though!

Not bad when they get bands on, but the rock night on a saturady suffers from the "younger" patrions, but the music aint to bad.

its cool on a sat, cuz even if the musics a bit crap which it rarely is u can just sit up on the balcony n watch old wresteling :-)

It's not so bad once in a while, but the patrons are a little on the young side for my liking, but the drinks are cheap and it must be a real alt venue cos my feet stick to the floor....

its definitely an 'on occasion' kind o fplace. when i do go i normally have fun but i think thats more down to the company than the venue.

The bogs stink, its full of kids, but it is a cool place for bands, and not so bad once in a while when your drunk.

Are the 80's-style nights still going on here? I'm interested in details if anyone has them...

Submitted by:Asha / 2003-12-27
Comment:
no, sadly the alternative 80's night was a flop due to bad/no advertising...so no-one went!

went there for the first time in like 6months n its still exactley the same as before, the music can get a bit to predictable at times but they do usually play all ur requests.

Submitted by:DemonMonkey / 2004-02-23

Unfortunetly I've never had the experience of having one of my requests played here.

Submitted by:Asha / 2004-03-16

i've only ever had ONE request played...and that was after I argued that I'd been subjected to NIN 'Closer' 2 nights in a row and begged them to play 'Head like a Hole instead'! i went for the first time in 2 months and the music was STILL the same. definately not a night I go to dance at, but OK for seeing different people once in a while. i think i'll mostly just stick to the gig nights.

Last time i went was a few weeks ago on a saturday and i thought it was a bit pants. The music was quite good but there was a few people out to just cause trouble and annoy people. I'd expect to get hassle from these people in a pub but not on a supposed rock night.

the venues not been that bad whenever i've gone to a gig here but nightwise it's painful, especally saturdays. & those toilets desperatley need fixing!

Will very soon be having a refurb - including the toilets being revamped. Plus unconfirmed rumours of new second room opening above the Stage Door. More info soon!

Now home to new weekly Monday student night TOXIC with DJ's Asha (Electric Head) and Daisy (Resurrection). Playing a mix of Metal, Rock, Goth & Alternative...request friendly!!

Submitted by:Asha / 2005-04-14

Unfortunately Monday student nights are now no-more. However the second room is soon to open and will be home to Electric Head monthly on Saturday! (running along-side the Dirt)

Submitted by:Asha / 2007-02-27

Electric Head is no more at the Sugarmill (or in Stoke) due to lack of numbers and suitable venue. Just your usual rock/emo/indie nights at the Sugarmill now - with music across both floors. Worth checking out for live gigs.

No longer has a rock night on Saturdays (now a weekly dance night). There's a monthly rock night on Thursdays... although that might not be on for long either.

Rock/metal nights are now on the THIRD Saturday every month with DJ Mightybeard. 10pm til 3am with most drinks at £2.50 all night.
