Description, by Lost Above All

Ex-bassist of the Norwegian black metal group Emperor, Mortiis developed his own style from within this band. Now a solo artist and heavily influenced by Nine Inch Nails his works are now ambient, electro and with a slight hint of goth rock throughout.

There have been several versions of this, Mortiis' fourth full-length release, including CD releases by Dark Dungeon Music and Earache (the currently available version) and as a set of five gorgeous picture discs back in 1996. Musically, this is still firmly in the mould of his previous incarnation of simplistic but atmospheric dark ambient music, but there are traces of the diversification that would become more apparent on 'The Stargate', making this perhaps more palatable to those out there who didn't enjoy his earlier, more darkly works. My major criticism of the Earache reissue has got to be that *awful* cover. At least it's got the old logo though .

This album was something of a surprise, as it was a sudden change from his earlier work. However, I think that within the electronic/darkwave genre, Mortiis finally found his niche, and this is as a strong an electronic/synth as you're apt to find, and as such, is weel worth buying. There are a few draggers on the album, but on the whole it works well, and may have enough cross-over appeal to secure him a larger audience. He still looks right stupid though.

This album is a masterpiece, I heard the track "I am the World" and didn't like it at first but after a good listen I found it was different and that it had grown on me so I bought the album only to find it was one of the best albums I have ever bought. There are few vocals on the album but the music speaks for itself transporting the listner to other worlds. I think this would have been a good alternative soundtrack to The Lord of the Rings with it's dark medieval vibe, the female haunting vocals are very good over the top of this just adding to the thick atmosphere it creates. This was a brave style of music to undertake as it's not exactly trendy but I suppose it's why I like it. Give it a try :)
