Ex-bassist of the Norwegian black metal group Emperor, Mortiis developed his own style from within this band. Now a solo artist and heavily influenced by Nine Inch Nails his works are now ambient, electro and with a slight hint of goth rock throughout.

I almost never hear a good word said about Mortiis' first album, so you should probably be aware that I am in a serious minority on this one. Originally released as a cassette demo, 'Songs Of A Long Forgotten Ghost', this came as such a shock. At the time, I was busy devouring pretty much everything coming out of the rapidly disintegrating Norwegian black metal scene, and to hear an ex-Emperor member playing keyboard ambient music was the last thing anyone expected. Many turned away in disgust but I was absolutely mesmerised by the incredibly melancholy tone to the two songs which make up this, his first album, issued through quality label, Malicious. It's so minimalist, it's hypnotic - if you like the keyboard tracks on Burzum's 'real' albums, you'll understand what's going on here. No, it's not brilliantly played, but what I always loved about Mortiis was that you were listening to him learning to master his instrument, and carve out his unique position on the fringes of the black metal scene, over the course of his albums. This is a piece of history.

The terms epic, viking and wierdly philosophical spring to mind when I heard this one. Using an interesting mix of 80's electro, with the feel of some kind of epic saga and nice guitars. Wonderfully unusual and nice to dance to as well.

This album is a masterpiece, I heard the track "I am the World" and didn't like it at first but after a good listen I found it was different and that it had grown on me so I bought the album only to find it was one of the best albums I have ever bought. There are few vocals on the album but the music speaks for itself transporting the listner to other worlds. I think this would have been a good alternative soundtrack to The Lord of the Rings with it's dark medieval vibe, the female haunting vocals are very good over the top of this just adding to the thick atmosphere it creates. This was a brave style of music to undertake as it's not exactly trendy but I suppose it's why I like it. Give it a try :)
