Description, by Lost Above All

Ex-bassist of the Norwegian black metal group Emperor, Mortiis developed his own style from within this band. Now a solo artist and heavily influenced by Nine Inch Nails his works are now ambient, electro and with a slight hint of goth rock throughout.

There have been several versions of this, Mortiis' fourth full-length release, including CD releases by Dark Dungeon Music and Earache (the currently available version) and as a set of five gorgeous picture discs back in 1996. Musically, this is still firmly in the mould of his previous incarnation of simplistic but atmospheric dark ambient music, but there are traces of the diversification that would become more apparent on 'The Stargate', making this perhaps more palatable to those out there who didn't enjoy his earlier, more darkly works. My major criticism of the Earache reissue has got to be that *awful* cover. At least it's got the old logo though .

I almost never hear a good word said about Mortiis' first album, so you should probably be aware that I am in a serious minority on this one. Originally released as a cassette demo, 'Songs Of A Long Forgotten Ghost', this came as such a shock. At the time, I was busy devouring pretty much everything coming out of the rapidly disintegrating Norwegian black metal scene, and to hear an ex-Emperor member playing keyboard ambient music was the last thing anyone expected. Many turned away in disgust but I was absolutely mesmerised by the incredibly melancholy tone to the two songs which make up this, his first album, issued through quality label, Malicious. It's so minimalist, it's hypnotic - if you like the keyboard tracks on Burzum's 'real' albums, you'll understand what's going on here. No, it's not brilliantly played, but what I always loved about Mortiis was that you were listening to him learning to master his instrument, and carve out his unique position on the fringes of the black metal scene, over the course of his albums. This is a piece of history.

Mortiis has never been afraid of putting noses out of joint (pun fully intended). He managed to confuse and polarise fans by leaving Emperor to pursue a career in 'dark dungeon music' (it is certainly his black metal fanbase which made him the biggest and most famous of the dark ambient artists associated with the Cold Meat Industry). Here, he turns around and has polarised his legions of fans again by ditching the ambience in favour of dancefloor electronica which can even appeal to the Kerrang! crowd. Nine Inch Nails comparisons are inevitable but there's a lot of 80s synth pop in here, notably Depeche Mode, although Mortiis' vocals are curiously understated. Ultimately this is quite a silly, throwaway album, but is great fun nonetheless. I can't exactly see where he's going to go after this, given that the extreme metallers have largely deserted him, and I'm yet to be convinced that the troll image is going to sell him to the same extent to Slipknot, Mudvayne et al.
